Are You Suffering

 Are You Suffering ?

A man turns his life over to God and does some great things! He preaches all over the world, he even was able to raise the dead… But in a tragic accident he watches helplessly as the tractor he is riding rolls over his nephew holding him in his arms he carries him to the hospital only to watch him die the question is: ARE YOU SUFFERING?
A husband is tormented by his wife’s adulteries, crying himself to sleep at times as she vividly displays herself around town.  He is broken inside so I ask again:  ARE YOU SUFFERING?
A child gets abused daily from a Drunken Father. He doesn’t understand why the angry exists why he is in so much trouble both he and his mother continue to get beat I ask again: ARE YOU SUFFERING?
Hellen Keller probably said it best: “the world is full of suffering… but it is also full of overcoming it!”
One of the greatest facts I have ever learned was no one ever Loved like Jesus! Yet no one ever suffered like Jesus!
The bible says that God is love, that God is all powerful, that God is illimitable, infinite, and inexhaustible yet the New Testament declares unanimously:
Matt 16:21 Jesus must suffer many things
Luke 17:24, 25 The Son of Man must suffer many things AND be rejected
Luke 22:15 I have desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer
Luke 24:26 Ought not the Christ to have suffered?
Luke 24:46 It was necessary for the Messiah to suffer
Acts 3:18, 17:3, Christ would suffer, Christ had to suffer
1 Pet 2:21 Christ suffered for us, 1 Pet 3:18 Christ suffered for sins
God’s Suffering… God’s Pain
Jesus was often misunderstood let’s take a look at for starters. John 14:9 have I been with you so long yet you have not know me Philip? Now turn to Luke 24:26 and we see this “ought not the Christ to have suffered?” Back in the Gospel of John Jesus proclaimed to them that they studied the scriptures because in them they have eternal life yet it is they that testify of him!
I ask the question to you today have you ever been misunderstood. Have your own intensions been looked at as if you have a different motive that what is really the truth!  How about your sense of decision making? You’re arguing with a friend because you’re misunderstood or you misunderstood someone right?
If being misunderstood can sting then being rejected must cut deep!
Turn to the Gospel of John:
John 1:11 he came onto his own and his own did not receive him!
John 7:5 his brother did not believe him
Matthew 26:56 all the disciples forsook him and fled
You see Jesus wept over Jerusalem as they would not allow him to gather them like a hen does her chick, and now the question I have for you is that of do you know or have you felt the cut of reject?
False Accusations add to the burden of Suffering.
Look into Matthew 26:59-60- false accusations show that people lied about who Jesus was, what he did and what he said.
I was once faced with a deep lie against me. In high school I was pulled into the principal’s office after picking up my brother from middle school. Without going into great detail I was accused of recruiting kids to the Latin Kings. When trying to explain myself and that I was only picking up my younger brother the principal said to me “oh yeah right they’re all your little brothers aren’t they?”
Jesus was accused of breaking his Father’s Holy Sabbath, blasphemy, a drunkard, a glutton, even being demon possessed! Have you ever been falsely accused?
Have you ever been in severe pain?
I remember wrestling a match with my rotator cuff so badly ripped up I could barely feel my arm let alone wrestle (I won By the way) I remember when Anthony my son fell off the couch and split is forehead open and bled all over himself, the floor, the wall and me! He was in pain and I was in pain as a father holding my son trying to stop the bleeding!
I remember being heart broken when my grandfather died! You see my friend Jesus knows pain. Not just because of the crucifixion and believe me that was painful but he was scourged you know beaten severely. He was probably hungry and we know he was thirsty.
He was in pain, he was God, he was God in Pain, God suffering.
There is a story of a man who had a heavy machine fall on him pinching him in an awkward position for hours! He can’t lie down, he can’t work, he can’t sleep, he takes enough pain medicine to sedate an elephant and says his pain is always between an 8 and a 10 usually a 9!
Can you imagine? God can! Jesus understands pain he understands suffering he knows what you are going through he can relate to you. He knows what it feels like; he’s been there before he is your brother in suffering but only worse!
You see physical pain is one thing and dying, seeing death, any amount of pain, suffering, discomfort it’s all terrible and Jesus went through it all! BUT the bible says there is a second death and friends this is where God takes it a step further for you and for me. He felt that pain too. He died for you!
Go ahead and read Matt 26:38 and now Matt 10:28 will put this into perspective this is going through Hell for you! A separation from God for you! Sorrowful even onto death! In the Garden Jesus didn’t say “gee fellas I am sick can we rest up a bit” HIS SOUL WAS DYING!
This is something we can hardly understand he was separated in the second death so you don’t have to be! Isaiah says he was numbered with the transgressors… he stood in the sinners place to obtain a resurrection that is sure for you and me.
Satan with his fierce temptations wrung the heart of Jesus. The Saviour could not see through the portals of the tomb. Hope did not present to Him His coming forth from the grave a conqueror, or tell Him of the Father’s acceptance of the sacrifice. He feared that sin was so offensive to God that Their separation was to be eternal. Christ felt the anguish which the sinner will feel when mercy shall no longer plead for the guilty race. It was the sense of sin, bringing the Father’s wrath upon Him as man’s substitute that made the cup He drank so bitter, and broke the heart of the Son of God.  {DA 753.2}
It was to redeem us that Jesus lived and suffered and died. He became “a Man of Sorrows,” that we might be made partakers of everlasting joy. God permitted His beloved Son, full of grace and truth, to come from a world of indescribable glory, to a world marred and blighted with sin, darkened with the shadow of death and the curse. He permitted Him to leave the bosom of His love, the adoration of the angels, to suffer shame, insult, humiliation, hatred, and death. “The chastisement of our peace was upon Him; and with His stripes we are healed.” Isaiah 53:5. Behold Him in the wilderness, in Gethsemane, upon the cross!
Behold him in the wilderness, in Gethsemane, and upon the cross
The Wilderness: as he wrestles the arch-tempter as he relies on a thus saith the Lord and a it is written.. See him weakened, see him tempted, see him hungry, and see him suffer! See him victorious!
In Gethsemane:  looks to his friends for comfort and help but finds none. He asks can you not even for one hour moments before he was to be betrayed… see him kissed and betrayed, see him heal his captor’s ear, see him abandoned.
On the Cross: as he endures the most physical pain, as he is being mocked and jeered to save himself, experiencing the second death! Screaming my God my God why have you forsaken me and die!
See him writhe in pain, see him moan… see him speak great word of encouragement to John and Mary, and salvation to a thief! See him die!
Have you been misunderstood? Behold Jesus
Have you been rejected? Behold Jesus
Have you been falsely accused? Behold Jesus
Have you been in Pain? Behold Jesus
ARE YOU SUFFERING? BE HOLD JESUS
What is Jesus doing on the cross? Dying so you can live, being separated so you can be united (see Ephesians ch.1), he is naked so you can be clothed, pierced so you can be healed, mocked so that you can have dignity (read about a reformer), he is thirsty so you can be made full, he groans so that you can shout for joy, he is taken down so you can be lifted up, he is buried so that we can be resurrected…
BEHOLD THE CROSS! Where the Sufferer suffers to the point of success!
Hanging upon the Cross Christ was the Gospel!
Christ was treated as we deserve, that we might be treated as He deserves. He was condemned for our sins, in which He had no share, that we might be justified by His righteousness, in which we had no share. He suffered the death which was ours, that we might receive the life which was His. “With His stripes we are healed.”  {DA 25.2}
Your suffering is just a window into salvation, his pain and suffering is your Passover and your pain and suffering is a light onto his Passion!
Your crucible illuminates his Crucifixion!
Are you Suffering? Come to Jesus

MARY and MARTHA

LUKE 10:38-42
38)  Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house.
39)  And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word.
40)  But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me.
41)  And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things:
42)  But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.

Martha was over-occupied with much serving. How busy she was in her service for the Lord, running around and doing this and that! Mary sat at the feet of Jesus, listening to Him speak. She quietly remained there seeking to become better acquainted with her Guest, building a sweet relationship and fellowship with Him. Martha, however, had no time for this. Wouldn't the Lord be so pleased with all of her activity? "And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: but one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her" (Luke 10:41-42).

MARTHA
MARY
LUKE 10:38-42 LUKE 10:38-42
Martha was SERVING Mary was SITTING
Martha was WORRYING Mary was WORSHIPPING
Martha was HURRYING Mary was HEARING
Martha was busy with the WORK Mary was attentive to the WORD
Martha was troubled about many things Mary was concerned about one thing
Martha was trying to UNDERTAKE Mary was trying to UNDERSTAND
Martha was OVER-OCCUPIED Mary was OCCUPIED WITH CHRIST
Martha was LABORING Mary was LEARNING and LOVING
Martha was ENERGETIC Mary was ENJOYING the Lord
Martha was BUSY and BOTHERED Mary was BLESSED

Are you a "Mary-like" disciples of the Lord Jesus?  In a "Martha world" (so busy and hectic) we need to have a "Mary heart."   May God give us Mary's heart to adore; Martha's hands to serve.

Martha in the kitchen, serving with her hands;
Occupied for Jesus, with her pots and pans.
Loving Him, yet fevered, burdened to the brim.
Careful, troubled Martha, occupied for Him.
Mary on the footstool, eyes upon her Lord;
Occupied with Jesus, drinking in His Word.
This the one thing needful, all else strangely dim:
Loving, resting Mary, occupied with Him.
So may we, like Mary, choose the better part:
Resting in His presence--hands and feet and heart;
Drinking in His wisdom, strengthened with  His grace;
Waiting for the summons, eyes upon His face.
When it comes, we're ready--spirit, will, and nerve;
Mary's heart to worship, Martha's hands to serve;
This the rightful order, as our lamps we trim--
Occupied with Jesus, then occupied for Him!
--Lois Reynolds Carpenter

uke 10:39--And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his Word.
John 11:32--Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw Him, she fell down at His feet, saying unto Him, "Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died."
John 12:3--Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment.

How Can I Deal with Loneliness

It’s a beautiful day, and you have no plans. All your friends do, though. They’re out having a good time. Once again, you’ve been left out! Being among the uninvited is bad enough, but what it implies is even worse. Maybe there’s something wrong with me, you say to yourself. “Why doesn’t anyone want my company?”

Maybe, more than once, you have been in a situation like this before. You may feel as if a wide chasm separates you from your peers. You stammer every time you try to start a conversation with them. When you do have an opportunity to socialize, shyness rears its head. Why is simple socializing so difficult?

Rather than remain stuck on your side of the chasm, you can build some bridges. Let’s see how.

Chasm 1: A Negative view of yourself (Inferiority complex).
Some youths relentlessly put themselves down. They’re convinced that no one likes them and that they have nothing worthwhile to add to a conversation. Is that the way you feel about yourself? If so, a negative self-image will only widen the chasm that separates you from your peers.

The bridge: Focus on your assets. (2 Corinthians 11:6)

Ask yourself, ‘what are my strengths?’ Each person has something he or she does very well. So think of some talents or positive qualities that you posses and list it down. No doubt, you have flaws and weakness, and it’s good to be aware of these. (1 Corinthians 10:12) Nevertheless, you also have much to offer to the world. Recognizing your assets, (something you are very good at) will give you the confidence you need to break free from a negative self-image.

Chasm 2: Shyness.

You would like to start a conversation, but when opportunity calls itself, you just can’t seem to open your mouth. Many students think that they are in a permanent state of shyness.

The bridge: Take a genuine interest in others.

Don’t worry; you don’t have to turn into an extrovert (outgoing person). Start by showing interest in just one person. “Simply asking others how they are doing or asking them about their work helps you to get to know them better,” says a youth called Jorge.

Don’t limit yourself to people of your own age. Some of the warmest friendships recorded in the Bible were between people with considerable age differences, such as Timothy and Paul, Ruth and Naomi, David and Jonathan. (1 Corinthians 4:17; Ruth 1:16, 17; 1 Samuel 18:1). Remember, too, that conversation is a dialogue, not a solo performance. People appreciate good listeners. So, if you tend to be shy, remember; you don’t have to carry the whole conversation! Write down the name of the two adults you would like to get to know better.

Why not approach one of the people you listed and strike up a conversation? The more you reach out to the whole association of brothers,” the less lonely you’ll feel. Peter 2:17.

Chasm 3: Disagreeable behavior.

The know-it-all is always ready with an insult, a wisecrack, or a put-down. Then there’s the person who just loves to argue and force his opinions on everyone.
Being “righteous overmuch”, he quickly condemns anyone who doesn’t live up to his personal standards. (Ecclesiastes 7:16) In the likelihood, you can’t stand being around people like that! Could it be though, that a chasm has formed because you act that way? The bible says: “The foolish one speaks many words,” and also “in the abundance of words there does not fail to be transgression.” (Ecclesiastes 10:14; Proverb 10:19).

The bridge: Cultivate fellow feeling. (1 Peter 3:8)

Even if you don’t agree with another’s view, patiently allow that one to talk. Dwell on points that you agree on. If you feel must express disagreement on some issues, do so in a mild and tactful manner.
Speak to others the way you would want to be spoken to. The Bible’s advice is to “keep doing all things free form murmuring and arguments.” (Philippians 2:14) Needless bickering or teasing, as well as insulting others or self-righteously condemning them simply alienates people. They will like you a lot more if you “let your utterance be always with graciousness.” Colossians 4:6.

At All Costs?

After this brief self-examination, perhaps you see some ways that you can build bridges to cross the chasm that may have developed between you and others. Of course, you have to be realistic. You can’t expect everyone to like you. Jesus said that some would even hate those who do what is right. (John 15:19) So it doesn’t pay to try to win friends at all cost.

Nevertheless, while not compromising your bible based standards, you can make reasonable efforts to be pleasant and agreeable. Samuel of Bible times firmly resolved to do what would please God. The result? He kept growing “more favorable both in God’s stand-point and from that of men.” (1 Samuel 2:26) With a little effort, so will you!

Plan yourself.

The chasm I encounter most is

Word of God is Like – Seven Images in Bible

  • Bible often portrays various visual images or pictures to describe themes or topics (Psalms 23:1, Psalms 18:1 etc).
  • Old Testament is full of images or visual representation of the things to come. In fact, Bible offers different images for the ‘Word of God’ itself.
  • We find seven different images for the Word of God in the bible. This bible study lesson is the list of these images found in the bible.
  1. The bible is Like a Double Edged Sword:
    • Hebrews 4:12: -”For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”
  2. Like Fire:
    • Jer 23:29: – “”Is not my word like fire,” declares the LORD, “and like a hammer that breaks a rock in pieces?”
  3. Like Hammer:
    • Jer 23:29: – “”Is not my word like fire,” declares the LORD, “and like a hammer that breaks a rock in pieces?”
  4. Like Lamp and Light:
    • Ps 119:105: – “Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path.”
  5. Like Food:
    • Mat 4:4: – “Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.”
    • 1 Pet 1:25-2:2:”But the word of the Lord stands forever.” And this is the word that was preached to you. Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind. Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation.”
  6. Like Seed:
    • 1 Pet 1:23: – “For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God.
  7. Like Mirror:
    • James 1:22-25: – “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it—he will be blessed in what he does.”

Why The Bible?

Why The Bible?
Jesus began His public ministry by reading from Scripture (writings found in the Holy Bible.) In fact, He quoted from them quite often.  If He didn't believe in what's written in Scripture, would He have used it as the source of much of what He spoke about?  Of course not!  Since Jesus believed in Scripture, shouldn't we?  Of course we should!
In the Bible, it's written, "All Scripture is God- breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work." A key word in this verse is All.  All means all, not some.

Doctor Luke

Doctor Luke
Luke, the writer of the New Testament books the Gospel of Luke, and the Acts of the apostles, was a physician by trade.  From his writings, it is also clear that he was a very learned man.
Luke first met the apostle Paul at Troas on Paul's second missionary journey.  On Paul's third missionary journey, we find Luke living in Philippi.
It would appear that Doctor Luke was a constant companion of the apostle Paul through his first imprisonment in Rome.  And even during his second imprisonment to some extant.
He was Paul's medical advisor and undoubtedly prolonged Paul's life and rescued him from many a serious illness.  he was a medical missionary.
There are several Church traditions as to his manner and place of death.  One is that he died peacefully in Boeotia and the other is that he was crucified with the apostle Andrew at Patras or at Elaea in Peloponnesus

The Apostle Saul ( Paul )

The Apostle Saul  ( Paul )

Saul (later to be known as the apostle Paul) was zealous in all that he did.  He was from the Jewish tribe of Benjamin, and when describing himself, he said he was a Hebrew of Hebrews; in regard to the Mosaic Law, a Pharisee; as for zeal, persecuting the Christian Church, as for legalistic righteousness, faultless. (Philippians 3:4-6)  Even so, he was to become one of the greatest evangelists of his day in spreading Christianity after his encounter with Christ Jesus on the road to Damascus.
Saul did everything he could to try and stop the growth of Christianity.  In fact, when Stephen (the first recorded Christian martyr in the New Testament) was killed, Saul was there (watching the cloaks of those who were stoning Stephen.)
On the day Stephen was martyred, a great persecution broke out against the Christian Church in Jerusalem and all except the apostles were scattered throughout Judea and Samaria.  At that time, Saul began to destroy the Church.  Going from house to house , he dragged off Christian men and women and put them in prison.  Eventually he obtained letters from the Jewish religious leaders to Jews in Damascus and he went there to bring the Christians (known as followers of the Way at that time) back to Jerusalem to be punished.
About noon, as he came near to Damascus, suddenly a bright light from heaven flashed around him.  He fell to the ground and heard a voice say to him, 'Saul! Saul! Why do you persecute Me?'  Who are you Lord?' He asked.  I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you are persecuting.'  Next, Jesus instructed Saul to get up and go into Damascus.
Because of the brilliance of the bright light, Saul had been blinded.  For three days he could not see (his companions had to lead him into Damascus by hand.)
While in Damascus, Jesus instructed a devout follower of the Way to pray for Saul in order that his sight be restored.  When he did, immediately Saul could see.   Saul was told that he would be Jesus' witness to all men of what he had seen and heard.  At that time, Saul got up and was baptized a follower of Christ Jesus.  Saul was to become known as the apostle to the Gentiles (non-Jews) whereas Peter was called the apostle to the Jews.
Saul's great abilities and earnest enthusiasm in spreading the gospel of Christ have made his name revered wherever the Christian religion is known.  It is his writings which make up much of the New Testament of the Bible.
After his wonderful conversion, Saul went to Jerusalem where he saw Peter, James and John.  Later, he went forth with Barnabas to preach (sent forth from the church in Antioch.)
Much can be read about the life and missionary journeys of Saul in the New Testament of the Bible.  On his first missionary journey, while at Paphos on the island of Cyprus, we see Saul, also, referred to as Paul (the name we have known him by since.)
Paul suffered much in spreading the Gospel.  Most of his missionary efforts were in what is modern day Greece and Turkey, and the surrounding areas.
After being released from imprisonment in Rome, as part of his further missionary journeys, it is believed that Paul, also, visited Gaul and Spain (there is, also, a belief that he visited England.)
When Paul returned to Rome, he was taken prisoner again and imprisoned for nine months with the apostle Peter in the Mamertine prison.
It was in Rome that the apostle Paul suffered martyrdom.  By order of the Emperor Nero, Paul was beheaded with a sword.

Bible Reading Schedule

How to use this schedule:
To read through the Bible in one year, follow both the Old Testament and New Testament readings.  You may read the Old Testament in the morning and the New Testament in the evening.  Or, you may read from both the Old Testament and New Testament in one sitting.  Both selections would probably take about 30 minutes.
If you wish to go more slowly and read the Bible in two years, you can follow the Old Testament reading on one day and the New Testament reading on the next day. Or, if you wish to read the Bible at your own pace, just cross off the chapters that you read each day.
